THE PORTS OF MASON COUNTY

PORT OF SHELTON
There is a lot of activity at the Port of Shelton. You will begin to see dramatic changes at the Johns Prairie Industrial Park. In a partnership between the Port of Shelton, Manke Lumber Company and Mason County, the clearing, grubbing and laying out of the Capital Hill Road Relocate Project will ultimately open up an additional 100 acres for industrial development and provide transportation relief for heavy industry. All buildings at Sanderson and John’s Prairie have a tenant in them. This is a first for the Port. This brings occupancy of building to 100%. Employment at the Port totals 551 jobs at both campuses.

A long anticipated grant agreement has been realized between the Port, FAA and WSDOT Aviation for the Sanderson Field Airport Master Plan Update, the last update was done in 1997. This grant will assist the Port in updating their master plan to chart their future for the next 20 years.

The Oakland Bay Marina Redevelopment project continues to progress. The Port is currently engineering the upland area of the marina to include additional Parking and landscaping that will enhance the area create a park like atmosphere. This will include: benches, lighting, and planting of greenery.

PORT OF ALLYN
The biggest challenge and accomplishment has been upgrading and expanding the Port of Allyn’s water system. Phase 1 replacement and upgrade of the existing system was completed in 2006. Phase 2 construction of a 144,000 gallon holding tank was completed spring of 2007. Final connection of the system will be accomplished this fall as developers move forward with projects. This project will provide water primarily to the commercial center of Allyn. It will also provide adequate fire flow and 4 additional hydrants to allow larger commercial structures to be built to support economic growth and bring jobs to Allyn.

The Port operates and maintains a waterfront that provides access to recreational users. This facility includes an upland park, boat launch, peer and dock that can accommodate recreational boats. In an effort to enhance these assets the Port is constructing public restroom facilities. The structure will have four restrooms and a combination shower/changing room for boaters and functions in the park. It will also provide public facilities for tourists visiting the area. This project will provide increased functionability of the facilities and at the same time reduce the potential for environmental contamination.

Beginning in February the Port began sponsoring a radio broadcast on KMAS covering Port activities and what's going on in North Mason. Community organizations can submit special announcements and we will cover as much as we can each week.

PORT OF HOODSPORT
The Port of Hoodsport is moving ahead with recommendations from their Master Plan. The Hoodsport Trails and the Foothills Parks will be developed as the first priority establishing the Port’s administrative stewardship over this property. The Port is investigating partnerships to develop the full potential of the Foothills Park. Once these administrative efforts are accomplished, the effort will shift to surveying, inventorying and developing conceptual master plans for the parks.

The Port is also focusing its efforts to facilitating master planning efforts for downtown Hoodsport. They are looking into the acquisition of the properties south of the Port’s existing dock property and discussing partnerships with private entities for a more cohesive development of a homeport. Concurrent with these discussions, the Port is looking to pursue development of a new technology restroom for the existing dock facility, visitor parking and a transportation hub.
